This report showcases the progress made on the environmental dimension of the SDGs. It also presents potential avenues on how advancing disaggregation of data could serve national and sub-national evidence-based policy needs and their impacts on societies, economies and the environment.

Although in 2025 data was available for 66 per cent of the environment-related SDG indicators, accelerated efforts are needed to close data gaps to better understand how the environmental dimension of Agenda 2030 is progressing. Tremendous efforts have been made to improve environment-related data availability from 34 per cent in 2018 to 66 per cent in 2025. However, accelerated efforts, transformative actions and better understanding of the reasons behind the unavailability of data remain critical for fully evaluating and informing implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In addition to data availability, having meaningful disaggregation of data leads to better national and sub-national evidence-based policies. The proposed disaggregation in this report serves as a reference for the relevant disaggregation needed for policymaking as well as its impact on the three dimensions of sustainable development.

Countries are encouraged to evaluate options for disaggregation based on their national and sub-national specificities, policy needs and statistical systems. Technical, human and financial resources investments in statistical systems are critical to make better use of the new data sources and advancement in methods to measure progress leading to a more comprehensive understanding of the environment. Targeted investment in statistical resources towards increased disaggregated data would further develop meaningful interventions and actions to achieve sustainable development within the national context.
