Overview of the Technical Assistance Mission to Ecuador on Economy-Wide Material Flow Accounts (EW-MFA)
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Ecological Transition (MAATE) of Ecuador, conducted a five-day technical assistance mission in Quito, Ecuador, from 11 to 15 November 2024. This mission was part of the project "Resilient and Agile National Statistical Systems to Meet Post-COVID-19 Data Needs to Recover Better", supported by the 14th tranche of the United Nations Development Account (DA14 project).
The mission aimed to enhance the technical capacity of Ecuador’s institutions in developing pilot Economy-Wide Material Flow Accounts (EW-MFA).
EW-MFA plays a vital role in monitoring Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8 and 12, which focus on sustainable economic growth, resource efficiency, and sustainable consumption and production patterns.
Key Activities of the Mission:
- Presentation of Current Data Infrastructure: The MAATE and the National Statistics and Census Institute (INEC) presented the current state of data collection and availability, highlighting existing data gaps.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborated with key institutions, including government ministries, agencies, and other organizations involved in environmental and economic data collection and accounting.
- Technical Assistance and Capacity Building: Delivered training and provided technical support to strengthen Ecuador’s ability to compile and utilize EW-MFA.
- Development of a Pilot EW-MFA: Drafted a pilot EW-MFA for a specific year, providing a framework for future accounts.
