Overview

The Ethiopia mission focused on a three-day National Workshop on Strengthening the Measure of Progress in Disaster Risk Reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa through the Sendai Framework Monitoring Process and Enhanced Disaster Loss Data.

The workshop took place in Addis Ababa from 28 to 30 January 2025 and was jointly organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in collaboration with the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission (EDRMC) and the Ethiopian Statistical Service (ESS).

The event was funded under the 11th European Development Fund’s (EDF11) programme titled “Strengthening Disaster Risk Governance and Recovery Capacities.

Objectives 
  • To enhance the technical capacity of national stakeholders in disaster-related and climate change statistics.
  • To improve understanding of international statistical frameworks and guidelines.
  • To strengthen data governance and inter-agency collaboration.
  • To increase awareness and use of scientific information sources for disaster risk reduction and climate change policy.
Key Activities
  • Presentations on international frameworks related to disaster risk reduction, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement, and the Sendai Framework.
  • National presentations on existing data governance, legal frameworks, and challenges in disaster-related and climate change statistics in Ethiopia.
  • Sessions on data ecosystem governance, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Earth Observation, and the role of data sharing mechanisms in strengthening disaster risk management.
  • Interactive group discussions on national coordination in disaster-related and climate change statistics, challenges in data collection and reporting, and alignment with international requirements.
  • Hands-on training on the Sendai Framework Monitoring (SFM) system and a self-assessment tool for evaluating national capacities in disaster loss data management.
  • Development of a draft roadmap to improve national disaster-related statistics and support Sendai Framework reporting.

Expected Outcomes

  • Strengthened institutional capacity to collect, analyse, and report disaster-related and climate change statistics.
  • Improved coordination between national stakeholders on data governance and information-sharing mechanisms.
  • Identification of key gaps and challenges in Ethiopia’s disaster-related statistics and proposed solutions.
  • Drafting of a roadmap for improving disaster risk reduction data systems and aligning national reporting with international frameworks.
