Overview

The Burundi mission focused on a three-day National Workshop on the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) in Bujumbura, from 17 to 19 December 2024. The workshop was jointly organized by UNEP, UNSD, and the National Institute of Statistics of Burundi (INSBU), under the Statistics and Data Project funded by the 14th Tranche of the United Nations Development Account.

Objectives:
  1. To enhance the understanding of the SEEA framework among Burundi’s National Statistical System and key stakeholders.
  2. To identify national priorities for SEEA accounts to support policy-making and sustainable development planning.
Key Activities:
  • Presentations on the SEEA framework, including concepts, methodologies, and practical applications.
  • National presentations on existing data and policies for environmental assets such as land, forests, minerals, energy, and water.
  • Focused sessions on SEEA accounts, including:
    • Land and ecosystem extent
    • Forest accounts
    • Mineral and energy accounts
    • Water accounts
    • Physical flow accounts for materials
    • Environmental activity accounts
  • Group discussions and exercises to assess national priorities and explore opportunities for implementing SEEA accounts.
  • Recommendations tailored to Burundi’s context to advance SEEA-related initiatives.
Expected Outcomes:
  • Increased capacity to integrate environmental and economic data for policy formulation.
  • Identification of priority SEEA accounts for Burundi.
  • Development of a roadmap for SEEA implementation, including capacity-building and technical support needs.
