Following up on the work done during the Methodological Workshop on Economy-Wide Material Flow Accounts (EW-MFA) held in Ecuador, in December 2024, and given the interest of several countries in advancing or initiating the development of the EW-MFA, the UNEP Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Ecuador organized a regional workshop in Quito, Ecuador, on 1–2 December 2025, to promote mutual learning and collaboration on this topic.

The event forms part of the Statistics and Data Project “Resilient and agile National Statistical Systems to meet post-COVID-19 data needs to recover better” under the 14th tranche of the United Nations Development Account (DA14 project).

The workshop brought together national and internation experts from Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Chile, Mexico, Panama, Argentina and Uruguay to discuss Ecuador's national experience in compiling the EW-MFA and strengthening regional cooperation in environmental-economic accounting, as well as to promote the EW-MFA as a fundamental tool for monitoring progress towards SDG targets 8.4 and 12.2 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and to inform national strategies on the circular economy, sustainable production and resource efficiency.
