Measuring Climate Change with a gender dimension for better adaptation and mitigation policies

This project is being implemented by UNEP jointly with UNSD, in collaboration with other UN entities and Resident Coordinator Offices and four pilot countries, such as Cameroon, Colombia, Jordan and Tanzania, from 2025 to 2028. The project is funded by the 17th tranche of the United Nations Development Account.

The objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity of countries to produce climate change and disaster-related statistics, taking into consideration a gender perspective, and enhance analytical capacities for better adaptation and mitigation policies.

Main Deliverables of the project:
  • A pilot list of core gender-sensitive climate change indicators proposed, and a methodological guidance developed.
  • The results presented at meetings of the Expert Group on Environment and Climate Change Statistics and the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Gender Statistics, to collect feedback and apply it to consolidate the proposed pilot list; and tested in four pilot countries.
  • A report on Climate Change and Gender developed and global webinars organized to strengthen national capacity.

Improved statistical guidance to monitor and report on climate change and disaster-related statistics taking into consideration a gender perspective, in line with international standards.

Outputs
  1. A mapping of available data sources in target countries was undertaken to construct a pilot list of national gender-sensitive climate change indicators, and a draft analysis of these mapping exercises was provided.
  2. A pilot list of core gender-sensitive climate change indicators proposed, and a methodological guidance for the core gender-sensitive climate change indicators developed.
  3. The results presented at meetings of the Expert Group on Environment and Climate Change Statistics and/or the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Gender Statistics led by the UN Statistics Division, with feedback collected and applied to consolidate the proposed pilot list.

Strengthened national capacity of four target countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean to monitor and report on the nexus of climate change, disaster-related and gender statistics.

Outputs
  1. Pilot testing of the methodological guidance for core gender-sensitive climate change indicators will be completed in four target countries.
  2. Joint workshop to strengthen national statistical capacity in four target countries to inform the development of gender-sensitive environmental policies.
  3. The results of the pilot testing of the methodological guidance for core gender-sensitive climate change indicators and national experience presented by four target countries at climate change and/or gender statistics expert events at the global level.

Activities and results:

Improved understanding of countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean regions in monitoring the nexus of climate change, disaster-related and gender statistics, informing relevant policy makers.

Outputs
  1. A report on Climate Change and Gender developed, which contains an analysis of national practices and lessons learned, drawing on work in four target countries, as well as guidelines on the implementation and policy use of climate change and disaster-related statistics taking into consideration a gender perspective.
  2. Two global webinars organized to discuss strengthening national capacity to develop environmental policy that clearly covers a gender perspective.
