Overview
UN Environment partnered with UNECE Statistics Division in the delivery of an environmental statistics training workshop focusing on Shared Environmental Information Systems (SEIS), environmental statistics & SDG indicators which took place in Astana, Kazakhstan on 25-28 April 2017. This national level workshop was hosted by the Agency of Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Participation included the representatives from the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Economy, as well as officers from regional statistics bodies in Kazakhstan.
Other participants included environmental and statistics focal points from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan who joined this national workshop to benefit from the training and exchange experience from other countries in Central Asia.
Their participation further promotes south-south cooperation.
The workshop facilitated a broader target group, both from statistics and environmental agencies.
This showed an overall perspective on data, statistics and indicators from the production to the use of environmental information.
The setting of this workshop provided the perfect opportunity to facilitate a self-mapping exercise of existing data flows for environmental SDGs and further clarify national capacities and identify project follow-up activities.
The results of this self-mapping exercise will be an important contribution from UN Environment and UNECE to the ongoing UNDG Mainstreaming, Acceleration and Policy Support (MAPS) mission and report for Kazakhstan being led by UNDP, to which UN Environment and UNECE Statistics Division have already contributed with expert inputs to various drafts of the report.
An integrated delivery approach by different agencies was highly appreciated by national partners and donors (UNDA 10th tranche programme, EU ENRTP GPGC, national contributions of Kazakhstan).
Integration of technical capacity building components with the beneficiary country (water and waste) was also a key to opening doors and to the success of the mission.
Acknowledgement on the need for further capacity building to be supported by UN Environment and UNECE under different project streams was seen as a clear added value of the mission.
